Salmon DNA for Your Skin? Let’s Talk About the Facial Behind the Glow

I know. The first time you hear Salmon DNA facial, it can sound a little unusual. But stay with me, because this treatment is clever.

The Bio-Meso PDRN Facial is an advanced regenerative facial that uses PDRN, a skin-supporting ingredient derived from purified salmon DNA, along with peptides, ceramides, panthenol and hydrating compounds to refresh tired, dull or stressed skin.

At Pure Skin Clinic in Remuera, I use this treatment when the skin needs more than a quick glow. It helps support hydration, texture, elasticity, barrier strength and overall skin quality. It’s also known as liquid needling, because it gives the skin a renewal-style nudge without traditional microneedling needles.

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. You don’t need to remember the full name. What you do need to know is that PDRN is used in advanced skin rejuvenation treatments to support repair, renewal and healthier-looking skin. In this treatment, it’s derived from purified salmon DNA and paired with ingredients that help hydrate, calm and strengthen the skin.

Think of it as one of those clever ingredients that helps tired skin remember what it’s meant to be doing. Supporting renewal, improving texture and bringing back a fresher, plumper look.

Instead of using a microneedling pen or mechanical needles, Bio-Meso PDRN uses microscopic freshwater sponge spicules. These are tiny natural micro-needles that are massaged into the skin.

During the treatment, approximately 300,000 to 360,000 microscopic freshwater sponge spicules per millilitre are worked into the skin. These spicules create invisible microchannels on the skin’s surface, helping the PDRN, peptides, ceramides, panthenol and hydrating compounds travel deeper into the skin.

You may feel a fine prickling, tingling or slightly scratchy sensation during and after treatment. That’s normal. It’s the spicules doing their clever little job.

The Bio-Meso PDRN Facial is especially lovely for skin that looks flat, dry, uneven or a little worn out. It can help improve the look of fine lines, dehydration, uneven texture, enlarged pores, pigmentation, acne scarring and general roughness. It can also be a good option for skin that needs barrier support, especially if your skin has been reactive, stressed or overworked by too many strong products.

If you’ve been curious about microneedling but the idea of needles makes your whole body say no thank you, this is where liquid needling becomes a very good conversation.

The Bio-Meso PDRN formula is massaged into the skin using a specific technique to help the spicules settle into the surface. You may feel warmth, tingling or prickling. Afterwards, your skin may look a little red or feel warm, tight, prickly or lightly textured. Some clients feel the spicules for a day or two, especially when touching their face or applying skincare. Light flaking can also happen as the skin renews.

This is all expected. The important thing is not to pick, scrub or panic. Your skin is doing its renewal work, and we want to support it, not interfere with it.

At Pure Skin Clinic, I include medical-grade MAX+ LED Light Therapy with this treatment. Bio-Meso PDRN works to support renewal, while MAX+ LED helps calm the skin, reduce visible redness and support the healing process. It’s one of my favourite ways to finish advanced treatments because it gives the skin that extra little “you’re safe, you can heal now” signal.

After a liquid needling treatment, your skin needs simple, calm support. For the recommended period after treatment, avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs, strong vitamin C, heat, saunas, heavy exercise, direct sun exposure and makeup until your skin has settled and I’ve advised it’s safe. Keep things simple. Gentle cleanser, hydration, barrier support and SPF.

A single Bio-Meso PDRN Facial is a beautiful refresh if your skin needs a boost before an event or you want to try the treatment. For deeper, longer-lasting results, I recommend a course of 4 treatments, spaced every 4 to 6 weeks. A single Bio-Meso PDRN Facial is $450. A course of 4 treatments is $1500.
