You’re not alone — pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we treat
Whether it’s melasma, post-acne marks, sun spots or general unevenness, pigmentation can show up for all sorts of reasons. But at Pure Skin Clinic, we don’t just look at the surface — we dig deeper to understand what your skin is trying to tell us.
Pigmentation isn’t just a cosmetic issue, it’s a sign that your skin has been triggered in some way. That could be UV damage, inflammation, hormones, trauma or an impaired skin barrier. And while over-the-counter brightening serums promise a quick fix, lasting change comes from understanding the cause, and treating it holistically.
What causes skin pigmentation?
Let’s start with the basics. Pigmentation happens when melanin, your skin’s natural pigment, is overproduced in certain areas.
The triggers can vary:
1. Sun exposure
This is the biggest culprit. UV rays stimulate melanin production as your skin tries to protect itself. Over time, this leads to sun spots and uneven tone.
2. Hormonal changes
Melasma (sometimes called the “mask of pregnancy”) is hormonally driven and made worse by heat and sun exposure. It’s complex and requires a tailored approach.
3. Inflammation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is your skin’s reaction to trauma, often caused by acne, burns, or harsh treatments. It’s especially common in deeper skin tones.
4. Heat, friction and injury
Hot showers, waxing, aggressive exfoliation or even your phone screen pressing against your cheek can all disrupt your pigment production.
What’s the best treatment for pigmentation?
The answer? It depends. Every case of pigmentation is unique, so the first step is an advanced skin consultation using our imaging technology to assess what’s going on beneath the surface.
From there, we customise your treatment plan. Some of our go-to approaches include:
- Microneedling / Collagen Induction Therapy: Stimulates cellular renewal and breaks up stubborn pigment while building collagen for smoother, clearer skin
- MAX+ LED Light Therapy: Reduces inflammation and encourages healthy cell function
- Dermaviduals custom facials: Rebuild the skin barrier and deliver pigment-balancing actives
- Osmosis Medi-Infusion: Gently resurfaces the skin while delivering vitamin A, niacinamide and other brightening compounds
- Homecare plans: With carefully chosen actives like tyrosinase inhibitors to manage pigment at the source
- And yes, sunscreen is non-negotiable.
You don’t need to live with pigmentation
With the right tools, guidance and consistency, we can absolutely make a difference. We’re not about bleaching or stripping. We focus on strengthening your skin, calming the trigger, and giving your skin the support it needs to return to balance.
Want personalised help? Book a skin consultation and let’s find the root of your pigmentation together.
NOTE: A mechanical peeling is NOT always recommended for pigmentation nor is Laser or IPL as standalone treatments. You will achieve better results with pigmentation utilising a combination of different modalities including CIT, LED and Dermaviduals.
