Try these 5 things
• Go to bed by 10 pm, lying on your right side to stimulate the vagus nerve.

• Take omega 3, such as extra virgin cod liver oil or other fish oil, 1 to 2 grams per day. It lowers your cortisol levels, increases lean body mass, and improves vagal tone as measured via heart rate variability.

• Add in some vitamins. Unremitting cortisol-raising stress can deplete certain micronutrients, including vitamins B1, B5, B6, B12, C, and tyrosine. Excess stress also can cause you to excrete magnesium, a mineral key to calcium absorption. Vitamin C has been shown to lower cortisol levels. L-theanine (found in green tea)
Is thought to reduce stress and calm down the sympathetic nervous system. L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to important neurotransmitters that can be depleted by stress, such as norepinephrine and dopamine.

• Wean from caffeine and alcohol.
Alcohol raises cortisol and the effect persists for twenty-four hours in men—probably longer for women.
The rise in cortisol may then disrupt your sleep. This has a knock-on effect on insulin. We know that one night of bad sleep makes you more insulin resistant the next day. Higher cortisol may disrupt the regular insulin signal. If you are chronically disrupting it by a moderate to heavy amount of alcohol, that will lead to more insulin resistance. Add to that high stress, not getting enough exercise to make your muscles hungry for glucose, and that’s where you start to get a compounded problem with insulin.

Caffeine directly induces the adrenocortical cells to produce more cortisol, as well as more epinephrine, norepinephrine, and insulin. For those that tolerate caffeine better than I do, I recommend finding the smallest dose of caffeine that supports your productivity yet doesn’t undermine your health.

• Avoid common food intolerances like gluten and dairy as l often see that they may raise cortisol in some people. Think of this as “food stress.”
